Conventional wisdom used to be if you were going to buy technology, invest in the best/newest available. But that wisdom has been turned on its head recently.

Nowadays, more companies are keeping their IT equipment longer and buying refurbished or used when it comes time to pick up new gear.

And it’s hard to argue with the results.

Example: Extending the life of an office PC from 36 months to 48 months can save you between $600-$700 for every $1,000 of the original purchasing expense. That’s according to Bob Houghton, the CEO of asset recovery and disposition vendor Redemtech.

Firms can also see similar results from extending the life of storage equipment, servers and other assorted IT gear.

In addition a growing number of IT departments are opting to purchase refurbished or used equipment.

In fact, according to a recent IDC survey, almost 75% of respondents admitted to purchasing reburbished PCs, servers, storage and peripherals.
