Even if your desk isn’t a mountain of papers and Post-Its, you may still not be making maximum use of your space.

So what’s the best set-up? Compare what you and your staffers have now against this checklist from the organizational whizzes at Onlineorganizing.com:

  • Shape: “L-” and “U-”shaped desks are the most efficient spaces.
  • Equipment: Phones, PC, etc. belong on one “wing” of your desk.

  • Free space: Leave the other side of your desk free to spread out whatever you’re working on at the moment.

  • Distance: Keep everything you need at arm’s reach.

  • Phone: For maximum ergonomic benefit, you want your phone on the side of the desk that’s opposite your writing hand (makes it easier to hold the handset and take notes).
  • “Extras”: For frequently-accessed books, CDs, etc., think about adding a desktop hutch.
  • Personal items. Yes, you want the picture of your kids, the cat, your childhood dog … But keeping these items to a minimum (at least on your desk) keeps clutter down.
