Which job is more physically taxing: stuntman or finance staffer? Hint: A stuntman gets a mat.
Between neck and back injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome and eye strain, the toll logging hours in front of a computer can be hazardous to staffers’ health — if they aren’t set up the right away.
To keep business as usual from landing your staffers on the DL, check that Finance workstations meet these guidelines set out by various safety and health offices:
Workspace
The ideal setup is an L-shaped one, with the PC on one side and the other side for non-computer-related tasks.
Get out your measuring tape: Ideally staffers should have all mission-critical equipment — screen, keyboard, mouse, phone and document holder — within a 16-inch radius.
Depending on the specific jobs staffers do most often, there are certain ideal setups:
Data Entry: With A/P staffers keying tons of invoices into your system, the placement of the keyboard and document holder are most important. Be sure those staffers’ keyboards are positioned directly in front of their “keying hand” with plenty of space free for the other hand to work.
Data Retrieval: A/R staffers scrolling through customer files and aging reports on-screen all day will need to pay extra attention to where their monitors are positioned above all else. Ideally the monitor should both tilt up and down and swivel horizontally.
