It’s easy to spot your top performers, but would you go so far as to call any of them indispensable? Answer yes to the following questions, and you probably should.
Question 1: Do they excel? Indispensable staffers are the best of the best. Not only do they get through daily functions with expert speed and precision, they also master new concepts and tasks efficiently and expediently.
Question 2: Do they always do more than the required amount? Beyond completing their own workloads, these rare employees can be counted on to consistently take on — and complete — additional work. They also will often volunteer to help out with projects that are running behind and often come up with creative solutions that create additional savings for the company.
Question 3: Do they prioritize and fulfill every function of their job description? The first two questions help to answer this question in part. But looking at the whole picture, indispensable employees know how to arrange all of their work in order from the most urgent to the non-essential.
Note: Regardless of how skilled an employee is at his or her job functions, how he or she interacts with co-workers is a vital part of said employee’s overall value. Employees who have trouble getting along with their co-workers have adverse effects on the production, morale and efficiency of the entire department.
