File it under F for “Frustration” — filing isn’t any finance staffer’s favorite task.
But it comes with the territory. Doesn’t mean you can’t make this chore a little more palatable, and perhaps get a little efficiency boost to boot.
One great tip? Break outside the alphabet.
You’ve no doubt opened a file cabinet to see all the folders there, neatly tabbed from A-Z. Very neat.
Maybe a little too neat.
Some filing experts encourage you to use whole words instead of just letters. Not for everything — just the items where you need a little more real estate in those overstuffed cabinets.
Example: Your company uses independent contractors. You probably don’t want them stuffed in by last name — too tough to keep track of.
So your files would look like this:
… G, H, I, Independent Contractors, J, K …
You still have your order, but it’s kept in a more logical manner. Should make it a lot easier for anyone who needs to to put their hands on a given file in a snap.
