Portrait of the American worker: longer hours, increased workloads, fewer resources and little to no work/life balance — all for the same paycheck.
At least that’s the picture a recent CareerBuilder survey painted.
According to the survey:
- 34% of employee said their workload increased in the past six months,
- 8% said it increased greatly, and
- 21% said they took on additional responsibilities.
With the added pressure and extra hours, employers always run the risk of burning out employees.
However, top managers know how the make the most of this difficult situation.
For example, if Daryl has consistently been picking up the slack and doing more than his job description calls for, make it a point to let him know you’ve noticed.
Simply letting him know, “I appreciate all that you’ve done lately,” can go a long way. But you may want to take it a step further. If possible, let Daryl know that his extra efforts will be recognized as soon as things improve — in the form of a promotion, pay raise, etc.
