What’s one of the hardest parts of implementing sustainable practices?
For managers, it’s getting decision-makers to say Yes.
Research shows that sustainable practices lead to real savings, and environmental managers can be huge advocates for green practices.
Some Dos and Don’ts
Here are some strategies for increasing a facility’s value through sustainable practices.
• Do look for simple solutions. You don’t need a huge investment to boost sustainability. It’s long been proven that simply switching to more efficient light fixtures and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment makes a big difference.
• Do benchmark energy and water consumption. You can make a plan for reducing usage to see where you need to improve.
• Don’t rush any sustainable investments. When it’s time to upgrade, research multiple solutions. You may find the third idea on your short list makes more sense than your initial favorite choice.
• Don’t be afraid of changing technology. Some facilities shy away from upgrading to new technologies because things change so quickly. However, if new technology can bring real savings, you don’t want
to miss out.
