Thanks to the feds’ latest move, employers will have yet another government agency looking over their shoulder to see if they’re classifying workers correctly.
The feds just enlisted the help of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to root out companies that classify employees incorrectly as independent contractors (ICs).
OSHA will join the DOL and the IRS as federal agencies designated to prevent worker misclassification. Buried in OSHA’s 2012 budget is funding to train OSHA inspectors to “identify and deter misclassification of employees as independent contractors.”
If you haven’t done so already, now’s a good time to revisit any individuals your firm has classified as ICs.
