For the next two months your company doesn’t have to physically lay hands on employment authorization documents to accept them.
That’s the word from the Department of Homeland Security in light of the COVID-19 epidemic.
But you will have a new process to follow to stay in compliance. Check out the details.
Check I-9 documentation once now, again later
You can initially inspect Section 2 documents remotely – video, fax or email all work – and “obtain, inspect, and retain copies of the documents, within three business days for purposes of completing Section 2” of the I-9.
Once things return to normal, your company will need to inspect I-9 documentation again in person.
Staffers should give “COVID-19” as the reason for the delay in the “additional information” field, along with “documents physically examined” and the date of inspection in either that field or Section 3.
