Keeping workers motivated can be a challenge for even the most seasoned managers. Here are four proven ways to ensure your department stays engaged.
1. Clarify employees’ expectations. When people are confused about what they should and shouldn’t be doing at work, they get stressed — and morale suffers. The more clearly you outline exactly what’s expected of employees’, the more comfortable, engaged and productive they’re apt to be.
2. Maintain healthy relationships. Managers don’t have to be pals with their employees, but it’s important to be friendly. Make it a point to ask staffers how they’re doing and listen to what they have to say.
3. Give them a voice — and a forum to use it. Employees need to know their input and opinions will be taken seriously. One way: Set aside a certain amount of time at every meeting for employees to discuss any work-related issues they’d like.
4. Provide growth opportunities. Most employees rate opportunities to advance their careers and build up their skills right up there with salary and benefits. So, look for creative ways to help your team grow (cross-training, industry conferences, etc.) and watch how quickly morale improves.
