Employers that don’t use pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) to process and pay prescription drug claims have become the minority.
Fifty-seven percent of employers are now using PBMs, according to a recent study by Buck Consultants.
That’s a significant increase from the 47% of firms who did so in 2009.
The study also highlighted the top prescription drug management initiatives employers are using today:
- Formularies (90%)
- Utilization management programs (78%), and
- Large cost-sharing differentials between cost-sharing tiers (77%).
