Heads up: You may want to huddle with IT soon to ensure everything possible is being done to safeguard your payroll data.
Reason: A recent study found a whopping 69% of IT managers send out confidential data (payroll and other financial info) over the Internet using unsecured e-mails. Plus around half of these workers said they send unsecured confidential or regulated data out at least once per week.
The study also found that these IT managers admit the information they send out is often data that could potentially require data breach notifications under new laws — if it is stolen or lost.
Another troubling trend the study revealed: Highly confidential info is being transmitted via regular, unencrypted e-mails and attachments on a regular basis. How often? The study found that:
- 69% of participants do it at least once per month, and
- 34% do it daily.
