Scores of businesses scrambled to add social media to their marketing strategy last year, but several of them made some very embarrassing — and costly — mistakes.
Advertising Age recently published, “Marketing’s Biggest Social-Media Blunders of 2011.”
Here are a few of our favorites:
Kenneth Cole. Early last year, in an effort to comment on the situation in Egypt and push its newest line, the retailer tweeted: “Millions are in uproar in #Cairo. Rumor is they heard our new spring collection is now available online.”
Ragu. The sauce giant put together a video of moms poking fun at their inept husbands lack of skill in the kitchen. Ragu then sent the video to a number of prominent dad bloggers via Twitter. Rather than finding the humor in the clip, several of recipients took to their blogs and Twitter accounts to trash the sauce-maker for its sexist video.
