So you’re gearing up to add some new blood in your Finance department and you want to ensure you land the best and the brightest to fill the open slots. What’s the best way to cut through the clutter and uncover the best candidates as quickly and effectively as possibly?
Finding A-players
By asking five specific questions, courtesy of serial entrepreneur Mitchell Harper:
1. Have you been promoted in a previous role?
Promotions are the norm for top talent. If a candidate has never been promoted, chances are he or she isn’t in the top talent category.
2. Have you led a big project?
The answer to this will show whether a previous manager trusted the candidate enough to lead others.
3. Is this the same as your last job?
Not only do A-level players change employers, they also switch up their roles at these companies. Reason: They crave challenges and like being put in new situations, according to Harper.
4. Are you committed to continual learning?
Top performers are committed to adding new skills. Ask candidates what they plan to learn from your company as well as how they plan to do it.
5. What do you like about our company? What would you change?
This two-part question is a must. All A-players do their homework. Not only should candidates be able to offer succinct feedback on what they like about the company, they should also address concerns and issues they have as well.
